Shampoo” - Elvis Perkins, “Elvis Perkins in Dearland” (2009)

Again I’m cheating a little bit—Elvis Perkins is my favorite of SXSW’s “P” artists, but they actually don’t have an mp3 posted for him. So this is a bonus! I picked up this mp3 somewhere else a few weeks back and was really moved listening to it.

Elvis Perkins has a beautiful voice and writes interesting symbolist metaphysical lyrics that make you sure that you’re listening to a love song, but not exactly sure in what way. He manages to be completely believably earnest, in that for example he can sing a lyric like, “Black is the color of/ a strangled rainbow”, and not sound at all angsty or depressed, but just to sound like that is the best way he could think of to express an interesting thought he was having.
