Crabapples” - Bruce Peninsula, “A Mountain Is A Mouth” (2009)

This music is weird, no doubt. But incredible. I’m not sure how to categorize it or what to compare it to. I can’t say for sure whether I like it, but I find myself wanting to listen to it out of sheer interest if nothing else. Their MySpace page says “folk/experimental/soul”, and I guess that’s as good a description as any. “Tribal” or “primitivist” are the best adjectives I can think of to describe it. It starts with drums that could be straight from a Brazilian bateria (though the band is from Toronto), and they keep driving for the whole song. The call-and-response style and the nonverbal choral accompaniment have an amazing disorienting or transporting effect. This is Kurtz music. The biggest musical revelation of the year so far for me.
