Do The Romp” by Junior Kimbrough - from “All Night Long” (1992)

This is the track I named the blog after. It might not be my very favorite Junior Kimbrough song, but it’s got his best qualities—a kind of slow sexy swagger that only an old guy can have (he was born in 1930), a pleasing lack of polish, and that hypnotic, modal guitar shuffle.

The song was released earlier as a single under the name “Do The Rump,” but I chose not to use that for the blog name, for obvious reasons. The song has been covered several times—I like the versions by The Black Keys (who go with “Rump”) and the Chris Duarte Group (no mp3 available on Amazon, sadly), though both add a lot of bravado that Junior didn’t bother with. I’m not so fond of Cat Power’s cover which seems to turn the song into something a little less confident.
