“Kemuri” - DJ Krush, “Strictly Turntablized” (Mo Wax, 1994)

I am going to see 47-year-old Japanese instrumental hip-hop pioneer DJ Krush perform at Bowery Ballroom tomorrow night. Although I’m not deeply familiar with his music, I know a number of his tracks and really enjoy his subtle, dark style, sort of a minimalist counterpart to DJ Shadow. Many of Krush’s tracks are collaborations with underground MCs, and those are definitely worth listening to, but I think that this strictly instrumental piece does more to highlight his own skills as a composer.

Make sure to listen to this on a sound system with good bass, or you will completely miss out on his brooding baseline and its interaction with the piece’s lighter sounds.
