Golden Phone” - Micachu & The Shapes, “Jewellery” (2009)

The other day my friend Jeff was raving about Micachu’s song “Calculator”, which I posted on The Romp a while ago, and which is not only amazing but almost certainly the best song about a calculator I have ever heard. But he was complaining that he had downloaded some other Micachu stuff and it wasn’t as good. This post is here to prove him wrong, because “Golden Phone”, the single off “Jewellery”, is also an amazing song, and probably her most accessible. For some reason, the first time I heard it I wasn’t that into it, but it’s really grown on me since. The vocal sample rhythmic part at the very beginning is creative, and I would even say sexy in its own way. I think Micachu’s great strength is her ability to put charming, soft, human-sounding vocals over mechanistic and sometimes even dissonant instrumentals, and make them seem like they were made to go together. Of course it helps that she has a cute accent. The song really gets good around halfway through, where the instrumental melody parts come in. I just can’t help but bob my head up and down whenever I listen to this.
